Astigmatism, a common refractive error, may be present alone or combined with myopia and hyperopia. It usually results when the surface curvature of the cornea is shaped more like the side of a rugby football than the cornea’s proper shape, which is like the side of a round ball. Those with astigmatism may experience blurred or distorted vision at all distances, or they may see a difference between sharpness of vertical lines compared to horizontal lines.
The most common treatment options for astigmatism are eyeglasses or contact lenses. For more severe astigmatism, LASIK surgery can be used to change the shape of your cornea so it can focus light correctly.

The direct cause of astigmatism is still unknown. Some people may be born with it, some may develop it as they get older, or it can occur after an eye injury or eye surgery.
The most common treatment options for mild astigmatism are corrective lenses. However, if you have strong astigmatism your optometrist may recommend LASIK surgery to change the shape of your cornea so it can focus light correctly on your retina.
